With boattail speedsters one of the highlights of the recent Ironstone Concours d’Elegance, it’s no surprise that one of the most iconic boattail designs – that of the Auburn speedster – took home the event’s Best of Show award.

Owned by Paul Petrovich of Sacramento, California, the deep maroon 1936 852 supercharged speedster had previously been displayed at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and had won the 2011 Niello Concours at Serrano.

There were special classes for race cars, hot rods and kustoms, microcars and – of all things – Borgward automobiles. The concours played host to 14 Borgwards, one driving down from Canada and another from Minnesota. Monika Borgward, the founder’s daughter, attended as a guest of both the concours and the Borgward contingent.

James and Dawn Gately, also from Sacramento, took the Most Elegant Open Car ribbon with their ultra-luxurious 1934 Cadillac V-16 Fleetwood convertible sedan. Subtle styling touches like the pinched taillamps, biplane bumpers, finned fender speed streaks and fender chevrons complemented the sumptuous camel leather interior.

The concours also featured a historic display of vintage race cars, ranging from a 1912 Packard racer to a 1970 AA fuel dragster. In the afternoon, each owner started his race car’s engine. The resulting roars brought crowds flocking to this area of the Ironstone lawns.

The Bay Area Engine Modelers also started their tiny running engines throughout the day. This exhibit by Bob Kradjian and Ken Hurst again drew large crowds. The wail of tiny V-8s and overhead-cam four-cylinders – engines no larger than a man’s fist – could be heard all across the concours field.

Held on September 28, 2013, at the Ironstone winery near Murphys, California, the concours displayed 326 antique and classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and vintage trailers. The full list of winners is after the jump.
